Skill Training

Extending one's knowledge is the first measurement to give the ability of making an improvement to her or his life.

The Trainings are imparted to enhance the skill of the women. Afterwards they are able to earn their own money and to stand on their own feet. If a women is able to contribute to the family's income, the role of the women is empowered.

There are various Training Programmes that take regularly place. In the past, there have been trainings for computer, tailoring, paper jewellery making, doormat making and artificial jewellery making. The Farmers Trainings cover vermi compost, mushroom cultivation and coconut tree climbing.

Tailoring Training Centre

Good Shepherd runs Tailoring Training Centres in Kunjampalayam, Karamadai and Devayampalayam.

Women from nearby villages trained to be a tailor. The trainees who have completed their course successfully are directed to employment opportunities. So far, this considers over 1150 women. The Majority of the students is able to earn an appreciable income either through home business or employment at textile companies. As postgraduate training, GSHEC arranged advanced skill training in tailoring in collaboration with PSG College of Arts and Science in Coimbatore for three months in the Centre.

The participants were given training under EDP to improve their skills in entrepreneurship focusing on enterprise planning, feasibility assessment, marketing, enterprise management etc. Additionally, some former students work now in the Ready-made tailoring unit, run by Good Shepherd on the compound.

Computer Training Centre

There are two Computer Training Centres in Periyanaickenpalayam and on the compound of Good Shepherd itself in Karamadai.

To date, 44 individuals completed the six months lasting training. The trainees learn to work with the computer programmes Exel, Word, Power Pint, DDP, Tally Web Designing and computer languages such as CC and Java.

Ambedkar Hastshilp Vikas Yojana

In 2009, Good Shepherd started taking part at the Ambedkar Hastshilp Vikas Yojana (AHVY), a Development scheme for Artisan communities that is run and supported by the Development Commissioner [Handicrafts], Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India.

The components of the project include Baseline survey, Social intervention, Technical interventions, Marketing interventions, and Welfare of the Artisans.

By the end of 2014, six batches successfully completed the four-month-long skill training in either Hand embroidery or Soft Toy Making. After the training 15 days lasting skill-up-gradation workshops for design and technique are provided.
